The Respironics Trilogy 100 Ventilator Might Cause Serious Side Effects
Respironics, Inc., a subsidiary of the Dutch company Philips Electronics N.V., manufactures the Trilogy 100 Ventilator. This device is designed to provide continuous or intermittent breathing support from pediatric patients who weigh at least 11 pounds to elderly patients who need mechanical assistance to breathe.
On October 11, 2011, Respironics notified the FDA that it had recalled 52 lots of Trilogy 100 Ventilators manufactured between February 1, 2011, and April 30, 2011. The company discovered that due to a manufacturing defect, the blower could dislocate, stopping the airflow to the patient and triggering an alarm. If the nearby caregiver did not respond to the alarm quickly, the patient could suffer from asphyxiation side effects or could die. The FDA classified the event as a class I recall, the most serious type, because the device could “cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
