Johnson & Johnson subsidiary LifeScan, Inc. announced a recall of nearly two million of its OneTouch Verio glucose meters because of measurement problems at high blood-glucose levels.
What Is the OneTouch Verio Glucose Meter?
People with diabetes or hypoglycemia use glucose meters like LifeScan’s Verio glucose meter to test their blood sugar levels on a daily basis. Users prick their fingers, collect a small blood sample, place it on a disposable paper strip, and then insert it into the glucose meter to determine whether they have too much or too little sugar in their blood.
OneTouch Verio Glucose Meters Might Cause Life-Threatening Side Effects
On March 25, 2013, Johnson & Johnson announced the worldwide recall of 1.2 million OneTouch Verio IQ meters, 670,000 OneTouch Verio Pro meters, and 4,900 OneTouch Verio Pro+ meters. According to Reuters, Johnson & Johnson discovered that extremely high glucose readings at 1,024 mg/dl and above failed to warn users of the dangerously high glucose levels in their blood. The units would instead shut off. The consequences of a defective OneTouch Verio meter reading mean users would not take action to correct their high glucose levels, which could lead to hyperglycemia. Symptoms include:
- Excessive hunger
- Excessive thirst
- Frequent urination
- Blurred vision
- Tingling sensations in the extremities
- Irregular heartbeats
Hyperglycemia occurs when blood glucose levels reach 200 mg/dl.
