What Is Nexavar and What Is It Prescribed For?
Nexavar is the brand name for the drug sorafenib. Made and sold by German pharmaceutical company Bayer AG, this prescription medication is used to treat liver and kidney cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Nexavar in December 2005, and Bayer sells it in oral tablets taken daily.
In cancer cells, chemicals called “tyrosine kinases” can promote the cancer’s spread. Nexavar is a “tyrosine kinase inhibitor” that interferes with protein kinases’ ability to help liver and kidney cancers grow.
Nexavar Might Cause Deadly Side Effects
According to research discussed in an article published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Nexavar might cause the following side effects:
- Arterial thrombotic events;
- Congestive heart failure; and
- Liver failure.
