Hospira Carboplatin Injection Legal Information Center
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that Hospira, Inc. announced a recall of three lots of the chemotherapy drug carboplatin due to the presence of “visible particulate matter.”
What Are Carboplatin Injections and What Are They Prescribed For?
Carboplatin is a chemotherapy drug primarily indicated for treating ovarian cancer. Starting in 1989 it was sold as Paraplatin by Bristol-Myers Squibb, but it has been generically available since 2004.
Hospira Carboplatin Injections Might Cause Life-Threatening Side Effects
On June 27, 2012, Hospira initiated a recall of 19 lots of various injectable drugs, including carboplatin, because the glass vials the drugs were in contained “visible particulate matter.” Hospira attributed the cause to a glass supplier defect, but in December 2012, it announced that the particles were crystallized carboplatin, which if injected into patients could cause deadly side effects, including:
- Blood vessel obstruction
- Local infarcation (tissue death)
- Thromboembolism (blood clot formation)
- Vasculitis (destruction of blood vessels by inflammation)
- Granulomatous formation in the lungs (a wall of tissue created by white blood cells to prevent the spread of infection)
The three lots of carboplatin specifically affected by the recall were distributed between March 2012 and September 2012. Hospira claims that there are no adverse event reports related to carboplatin injection particles, but it is continuing its research on the issue.
