In June 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that DePuy Orthopaedics, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, had recalled its Luster hip replacement system.

What Is The DePuy Luster Hip?

According to the FDA’s recall announcement, the DePuy Luster hip is a cemented polished femoral hip stem made of cobalt and chromium. The stem is inserted into the femur to support the femoral head of the hip replacement. It can be used with any metal-on-metal bearing or acetabular cup that DePuy manufactures.

The DePuy Luster Hip Has Been Recalled

On June 29, 2012, the FDA announced that DePuy had issued a class II recall of the Luster Cemented Polished Femoral Hip Stems and another product, the Ultima LX Cemented Polished Femoral Hip Stems. The recall affected any of those components that were implanted with any metal-on-metal hip implants.

DePuy’s reasons for the recall are unclear, and the “Reason for Recall” section of the recall announcement appears to end mid-sentence. It is unknown what side effects the DePuy Luster hip causes, if any.

The FDA’s recall announcement followed an “URGENT RECALL INFORMATION-FIELD SAFETY NOTICE” letter that DePuy sent to customers on May 16, 2012. According to the announcement, DePuy’s recall affects 85 units in 69 lots, and “no consumer action” is necessary. Nevertheless, the FDA defines a recall that is class II, the category it assigned to DePuy Luster hip stem recall, as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
