DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Lawsuit Information Center

Johnson & Johnson has recalled one of the replacement hips it manufactures because the devices can come loose, fracturing the bone around the implant and causing tumors. Your replacement hip should have meant more mobility and much less pain, but now you’re finding out that it might be a source of new, serious medical problems. The Rottenstein Law Group knows that you don’t have to stand for this.

View the case snapshot

The defective and dangerous replacement hips have already been implanted in patients. The recall means that patients who have already undergone one surgical procedure to replace a hip now must undergo a “revision.” That is: a second surgery. But even if the defective device is replaced, it can leave behind dangerous, possibly deadly fragments that might not be discovered for years.

Is My Hip Dangerous?

Two devices are being recalled: the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System. Each of these metal units replaces a worn or weakened part of the hip, which consists of a socket and a rounded bone that fits into that socket like a ball. Total hip replacement involves replacing both parts at once. The defective replacement hip units have been recalled because one in eight patients requires a second invasive procedure to correct the first one. The replacement hips just don’t fit the way they’re supposed to. Many orthopedic doctors believe that the units were poorly designed. At least one surgeon has testified that the unit he removed from a patient had failed catastrophically.

More Than Just an Inconvenience

If you have a recalled replacement hip, you’ve likely already been contacted by your doctor about scheduling “revision” surgery. You’ll have to undergo a second procedure to get a new replacement hip. You might have to take time off from work. You might have to cancel vacation plans. In any event, having more surgery is not how you want to spend your time. But there’s more to be concerned about…

Doctors have determined that some defective ASR hip units are actually deteriorating and depositing flakes of metal into patients’ bloodstreams. In addition, some recipients of ASR replacement hip units have developed pseudotumors—soft tissue masses resulting from adverse reactions to toxic metal debris. Even if you haven’t experienced pain, swelling, or difficulty walking, you might still be in serious danger, without knowing it.

Compensation for Your Harm

Johnson & Johnson has admitted that it is to blame for your defective replacement hip—more or less. J&J has stated that it is “committed to assisting patients… and paying for the cost of doctor visits, tests and procedures associated with the recall.” But you’ve been betrayed once already… and if you do need to stand up to Johnson & Johnson, then you’ll want a dedicated, attentive advocate by your side. The Rottenstein Law Group will represent your interests alone.

The process of demanding compensation for the harm you’ve suffered (caused by a defective product manufactured by a negligent company) can be complicated, even if it doesn’t seem fair that you should have to go through even more trouble to be made whole again.

The DePuy lawyers of the Rottenstein Law Group believe that getting satisfaction from the company that harmed you shouldn’t be just more hardship. That’s why we do everything we can to streamline the process. And we remain in touch with you throughout the process of seeking compensation for the harm you’ve suffered. RLG knows that you want to be kept updated about your case. So we’ll provide regular, frequent updates regarding not just the progress of your case, but also news of other, similar cases, and even about the product and the manufacturer as well.

Hi, we are located in South Africa and my husband is having his hip redone next week (22 June). Although DuPuy are covering all costs etc., my husband already suffered complications the first time with multiple pulmonary embolisms and loss of income as he is self employed. Are you able to take on cases outside America?

I am in Brits South Africa and have had a DePuy asr hip replacement in 2006. I have severe pain in hip buttock and groin at times even prefer to drag my leg than use my hips. I have other symptoms -- eyesight deteriorating, was hospitalized twice in the past year for severe headaches and nausea; doctors could not find cause and treated it as a virus. Have also joint pains on my elbows, wrists and knees. At times its painful to lift my arms again. Tests are done but no cause was found. I cannot teach at school anymore because it's too painful to stand and move around all day.

My hip failed almost straight away. I had the resurfacing and have had constant pain and its loose. This has been six years now and still waiting to have it replaced. The surgeon also told me that they didn't have replacement that was any good.

You’ve taken enough. We'll take it from here. Click here to contact us now.
