The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Ad-Tech Medical Instrument Corporation has recalled its Macro Micro Subdural Electrodes because they might cause brain damage side effects.
What Are Macro Micro Subdural Electrodes?
Physicians use subdural electrodes to measure electrical activity in patients’ brains. The electrodes are placed on the cerebral cortex (the brain’s surface) with the contact points in grid or strip formations to gain accurate readings. Subdural electrodes can help medical professionals study a variety of conditions, such as by determining the extent of damage a stroke victim has suffered or the severity of an epileptic seizure.
Macro Micro Subdural Electrodes Might Cause Brain Damage
On December 18, 2012, Ad-Tech Medical Instrument Corporation announced the voluntary recall of 115 units of its Macro Micro Subdural Electrodes because it believed the electrodes were not properly treated with the silastic surface, which is a silicone plastic insulator. This can cause damage to the brain when implanted, and removed electrodes can leave debris in patients’ brains, causing other injuries. Symptoms can include:
- Abrasion of cortical brain tissue
- Damage to cortical fibers
- Infarct or seizure activity
The FDA posted Ad-Tech’s recall announcement along with a list of the 115 affected units, which were manufactured and distributed between June 2006 and March 2012.
Ad-Tech has reported one serious injury caused by its Macro Micro Subdural Electrodes.
